Differences Between VOIP & PBX
The differences between VOIP & PBXVOIP Voice Over Internet Protocol | PBX Personal Branch Exchange
VOIP technology is integrating with or
completely replacing the PBX systems both in homes & businesses.
The VOIP system is based on the internet, & possible the only device being used to manage it is a single PC.
It works by sending your phone calls over your LAN [Local Area Network] & then perhaps almost anywhere in the world over internet. This means you may not be actually using any telephone lines to make the call though you do usually use the local telecomm land lines to carry the internet traffic. .
If you are making a call to a standard telephone, the VOIP system will make a call from the closest location available to the telephone. Even when calling to a land-line overseas; the system will send your telephone call over the internet until the call is connected to a ‘land-line” close to the telephone you are calling.
The VOIP system takes little room as most of the hardware its uses is already there to be used if you have a LAN already set up It is mainly software using hardware you probably already have.
The PBX systems range in size.
In the past those used in large companies took up a small room. It is essentially a stand-alone telephone-exchange for a particular company, a group of companies or perhaps a building.
The PBX does not use the internet or your LAN system even thoughit sometimes uses spare cable pairs in your LAN cabling.
